Resume surgery, one line at a time
- Hand it a bullet and say “cut this to twelve words.” Recruiters skim. Your sentence about “leveraging cross-functional synergies” gets three seconds, tops.
- Ask for five stronger verbs than “responsible for.” You’ll get led, built, owned, shipped, cut.
- Paste the whole thing and ask where you repeated yourself. I’d used “managed” nine times. Nine. My resume read like a shift schedule.
- Request an ATS check — will a bot choke on your fancy two-column layout? Usually yes, so go single-column.
- Ask it to flag every passive sentence and rewrite the worst one.

- Turn your resume bullets into LinkedIn lines with a touch more warmth — the platform rewards personality your resume can’t.
- Ask which keywords recruiters actually search for your role, then plant them in your Skills.
- Feed it your last three titles and ask for a one-line “what I really did” under each.
- Generate 15 skills to add. LinkedIn lets you list 50, and endorsements are basically SEO for your face.

You don’t need a subscription. Using AI without paying gets you 90% of the way there, and I’ll die on that hill.

So is AI worth it here? For editing and reformatting, absolutely. For paying $29 a month to autofill a template you’ll use twice, no. Everyday AI tools cover this. One warning, though: don’t paste anything with your home address or phone number into a free chatbot — strip that out first, then add it back to the final Word file yourself. Spend the saved money on the interview outfit or, honestly, lunch.
Where AI falls flat on its face
Now the part nobody sells you.
- Never let it invent accomplishments. It will cheerfully hand you “spearheaded a 340% revenue increase,” and a hiring manager smells that fake from across the room.
- Don’t send the generated cover letter as-is. They all read identical — chipper, hollow, allergic to a single specific detail, and every third one opens with “I am writing to express my interest.” A hiring manager reads forty of those before lunch.
- Skip AI for anything that needs your real voice: why you left teaching, the odd side project you’re weirdly proud of, the gap year you don’t want to explain.
Knowing when not to use AI is the actual skill. The tool drafts. You decide. Anyone who outsources the deciding ends up sounding like everyone else who did.
- Read every finished line out loud before you submit. If you wouldn’t say it to a person, it isn’t yours yet — rewrite it in your own clumsy words.
- Run the final version past one real human who owes you a favor.
